Generalmente se tiende a confundir el significado del Halal. El significado de la palabra Halal se vincula únicamente a los alimentos aceptados por el Islam. Esto es cierto, pero el Halal abarca muchos más. El Halal, es además todo tipo de acciones, cosas y comportamientos aceptados por el Islam.
En cuanto a la carne, para que sea Halal, debe cumplir una serie de normas. El sacrificio del animal se hace de acuerdo al Tadhkiyah, esto significa que el animal debe ser sacrificado de acuerdo a las leyes del Islam. Para que el sacrificio se considere Tadhkiyah, debe cumplir una serie de requisitos. Entre esos requisitos se encuentran: que el sacrificio sea para después comerse al animal, que en el sacrificio sea en nombre de Allah y que fluya la sangre del animal. Cumplidos estos requisitos, existen dos métodos de sacrificio: el Dhabh y el Nahr.
Toda la carne que no cumple el Tadhkiyah no es Halal, por lo que se les denomina Haram. En el Corán se recoge lo que está prohibido comer. El musulmán tiene prohibido comer cualquier animal muerto por sí solo, como la carne de cerdo, o cualquier animal que se haya sacrificado en nombre de otro que no sea el de Allah. Tampoco no son aceptados los animales muertos por estrangulamiento, o los golpeados hasta la muerte (y otras condiciones más).
Visto así, uno puedo pensar que un musulmán no puede ir a un restaurante en Europa a comer carne, puesto que su sacrificio no será acorde al Corán. Existen por tanto, ciertas reglas y excepciones que permiten al musulmán poder alimentarse de animales sacrificados por otros.
Mientras que el alimento sea lícito para el otro, lo será también para el musulmán, que podrá comer de él. Sin importar tampoco el sacrificio del animal, si el otro considera que el sacrificio es el correcto para comerse al animal, entonces el musulmán podrá comer de él. Esto no incluye al cerdo, ya que ingerirlo está completamente prohibido.
